Legal definition of assault
Robbery, Assault & Battery, Theft Legal Terminology

a person in guilty of assault when she/he attempts to strike (or actually strikes in some states) another human either recklessly, or intentionally, and that person suffers physical injury as a result of the attempt/strike.

Criminal laws differ widely from state to state. E.g., NY Penal Code distinguishes between different degrees of assault.

"Aggravated assault" is an attack committed in connection with another crime, or an assault of a police officer, or paramedic on duty, or a threat made with a weapon, or with intent to rape, or murder.
Assault as a civil wrong is a physical act of a threatening nature which puts an individual in reasonable fear of imminent bodily harm. A plaintiff (or sufferer) may be awarded monetary damages from the defendant (the guilty person).
